What is Li-Fi Technology?

Li-Fi aka ‘Light Fidelity’, is a wireless communication technology which uses light to transmit data between devices. It was launched in the year 2011 by Harald Hass. It sends light at high speed in ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared spectrums.

The difference between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi is that Wi-Fi uses radio frequency, where the working process is based on the voltage on the antenna for data transmission. Li-Fi uses light intensity for data transmission. Li-Fi's development increased by 82% from 2013 to 2018.

Features of Li-Fi

§  Li-Fi technology allows the user to connect to internet using several devices like streetlights, lamps or LED televisions, and it is faster and safer than Wi-Fi.

§  For surfing, the user has to show the mobile or tablet toward the light bulb.

§  The bandwidth and speed are high in the frequency of about 200000 GHz, which transmits data faster.

§  Li-Fi changes the individual's lifestyle by the user, allowing them to connect to the internet where electromagnetic radiation is prohibited.

§  It is used to find a location. LED lights help to get traffic information, connecting various home appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers to form a network.

§  The art lighting helps to connect mobiles which display the piece of information or history.

§  The sensitive and confidential data is transferred more securely.

§  The lighting in shops helps the user know more about products and discounts.

§  Light waves have the facility to travel in water than waves.

Advantages of Li-Fi

·        The speed of Li-Fi is about 224 Gbit/s, where 1.5 Gbit is downloaded in thousands of seconds.

·        Few components are required, and less energy is used for the Li-Fi facility, where one can turn on the light.

·        Easily accessible, one can convert the light fitting into an internet connection point.

·        Increased bandwidth where it can transmit a large volume of data with a light spectrum of 10,000 times wider than the radio spectrum.

·        Reliability is more, where communication is performed without interruptions, making the Li-Fi more stable.

·        No interruptions are occurred in radio communications by electronic light.

·        No cable is needed where it can operate with infrared light, which is not visible to the human eye.

·        The internet connection is available through light, so it avoids the collapse of the radio spectrum.

Working process of Li-Wi technology

An LED device is connected to the device and then is related to the internet. The data on the internet flows in the device into the bulb, which is carried by light waves. The wave containing the date falls on a receiver connected to the computer.

Disadvantage of Li-Wi

§  Li-Wi usage in nasty weather or harsh lighting condition is impossible.

§  The specialized LEDs are required to operate this technology correctly.

§  During the night times, the working process may be a little difficult

§  Some more devices are required for functionality.

§  The user cannot move to another room unless the presence of a wired bulb.

§  It cannot pass through objects

§  Installation cost is high in VLC system

Applications of Li-Fi
